IT ONLY TAKES ONE TEEN DISTRACTED DRIVING CAMPAIGN
Concerned students at Morgan County RII HIGH SCHOOL have joined Morgan County CLEAR, ACT Missouri and Missouri SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) to stop distracted driving. Fifty schools throughout Missouri, including Morgan County R2 High School, are participating in the community-wide IT ONLY TAKES ONE campaign. The IT ONLY TAKES ONE campaign was designed to educate Missouri teens about the many distractions they encounter behind the wheel. Distraction remains the primary reason that car crashes are the number one killer of teens. This is why, the core message of the campaign is, “Drive Responsibly. There’s only ONE you.”
Donna Chapman, CLEAR coordinator, said, “At Morgan County R2 High School, student members of Morgan County CLEAR are holding seat belt checks, as well as assisting with a Distracted Driving Video Program lead by local Highway Patrol Trooper Anthony Piercy. This program which will be held on Thursday, March 6th will not only introduce students to many distractions while driving but will also be an introduction to a parent-teen driving contract. In return for a completed contract that has both a parent and a teen signature, students will receive a free “It Only Takes One” t-shirt or thumb bands. CLEAR is planning for additional activities which will include recording distracted driving PSAs, and distribution of the Missouri Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) law handout to parents.”
To take part in this campaign, CLEAR had to register in the fall. The t-shirts will be an effective tool to get students talking about the dangers of distracted driving, but CLEAR isn’t stopping there. Chapman said, “CLEAR and student members will be carrying this message out into the community – with posters, thumb bands, belt checks, and other materials that would spark conversation between teens and adults about safe driving practices. “
The IT ONLY TAKES ONE campaign has been made possible by grants received from the Missouri Department of Transportation, Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety.
